Using mobile phones in search and online marketing is the way forwards

23rd February 2010 by Tanisha Sakhawat

Businesses using social media sites as part of their search marketing or online direct marketing campaigns, should consider mobile phones in their strategy, according to one industry insider.

Tim Gibbon, founder of Social Media Portal, says there are more mobile phones owned, than there are computers, meaning that people use their phones more often than their computers. Online news providers have already got their foot in the door by providing widgets, such as the BBC news widget, available on the mobile web.

He believes that microblogging on phones, will work for brands who want to market products to as many people as possible. People are already looking on Twitter every two minutes via their mobile phones, subconsciously coming across marketing strategies, so what is to stop them working together more widely… Mr Gibbon said: “For some businesses, tweets that are pure updates may be enough, but for others, more dialogue and conversation will be needed to heighten appeal and acceptance.”

Entrepreneurs who tap into the trend may boost their exposure and be perceived as cutting edge, says Andrew T. Stephen, assistant professor of marketing at INSEAD, a business school in Singapore and Fontainebleau, France. “It’s sort of a signal that you’re up with things,” he says.

Data taken by ComScore last week revealed, that the number of visitors to Twitter reached an all time high in January. This shows that more and more people are turning to Twitter for consumption and retweeting what they find interesting.
