Yahoo rolls out monthly search update

The monthly update for Yahoo’s search engine algorithms is to take place over the next few days.

January 2010′s algorithm change was announced on the Yahoo! search engine marketing blog this morning. This may affect any SEO company engaging in search engine optimisation for Yahoo! as changes to algorithm can make both minor and major changes to search rankings.

The blog post, part of Yahoo’s “Weather Report” series said:

“The Yahoo! Search engineering teams are rolling out updates to crawling, indexing and ranking algorithms. Similar to previous updates, you may notice some ranking changes and page shuffling during the process, which we expect to complete over the next few days”.

Yahoo invites the search engine marketing community to share their feedback on the latest update on their Site Explorer Suggestion discussion board.

The ‘Weather Report’ series provides general information on changes to the Yahoo search index but it is often criticised by commentators for the lack of detail included in the posts. Although the latest post says “Thank you for the feedback, letting us know the community still finds these weather reports helpful” none of the posts for the past year have contained any detail on the updates beyond that they are taking place.

This has prompted Search Engine Watch to describe it as a ”typically brief and vague message”. It is possible that one of the reasons Google is so popular with search engine marketers is that the company’s development team constantly engages with the online community, providing in-depth discussion of the specific alterations made and their effects.
